Spreading cheer by singing loud for all to hear.

Today a friend – who really gets me – posted a photo that said “If you can’t handle me randomly blurting out song lyrics that relate to what you just said, we can’t be friends.”

I sometimes think that if I could devote the part of my brain that has memorized every lyric from every song I’ve ever heard to something more productive, I would have already won a Nobel Prize in Economics. Or maybe I’d be working for NASA. It’s actually quite unsettling, if you think about it.

My friend – who is a Pilates instructor – said that Rise Up, Rise Up gets in her head every time she tells the class to rise up, and that would happen to me too. In fact, ever since we had this exchange several hours ago, I’ve had Rise Up, Rise Up going through my head.

The song lyrics that come to mind are almost exclusively from the eighties or nineties, and since this is a throwback blog, here are the top ten phrases that give me long-lasting earworms. Truthfully, I almost never sing them out loud, but I ALWAYS get these songs stuck in my head, and all it takes is one unwitting lyric. How many can you identify with?

*********

School principal, at a School Council meeting, discussing budget and staffing issues: Here’s the situation…

Me: My parents went away on a week’s vacation and! They left the keys to their brand-new Porsche! Would they mind? Mmm…well…of course not.

**********

Two friends, discussing carpool arrangements: Do you need a lift?

Me: Who’s the kid in the back? Who else? Will Smith! Living that life some consider a myth.

**********

Friend, upon hearing something shocking: Oh. My. God.

Me: Becky, LOOK at her BUTT.

**********

Friend, while we’re out for dinner: Should we order a bottle of red?

Me: Bottle of red, bottle of white, it all depends upon your appetite. I’ll meet you anytime you want! In our Italian restaurant.

**********

Random woman at the playground, speaking to her whining child: All right, STOP.

Me: Collaborate and listen! (NOTE: this one also happens to Hannah)

***********

Friend, while we are waiting for another friend to join us at the dog park: Here she comes.

Me: Watch out boys, she’ll chew you up! Whoa-oh here she comes. She’s a maneater!

***********

My son: Mom, tomorrow morning will you wake me up?

Me: I’ll wake you up! Before I go-go! ‘Cause I’m not planning on going solo!

***********

My husband: What did you think…

Me: I would do at this moment? When you’re standing before me…with tears in your eyes!

***********

My husband, reading how-to instructions: Okay, the first step…

Me: Ask her out and treat her like a lady!

***********

Random woman at the playground: Just hold on!

Me: FOR ONE MORE DAY.

I think I need to start actually singing these out loud when I hear them. After all, isn’t that the best way to spread cheer, singing loud for all to hear?

  1. This may be a little before your time, but as I was trying to get N out the door this morning I was singing to him, “It’s time to ease on down, ease on down the road.” He gave me a look and didn’t even ask.

  2. Bottle of red, bottle of white, Maneater and What did you think? are my favourites. I might just add all these to my birthday party playlist. Thanks again for rescuing me!

  3. I’m actually kind of surprised how many of these I did not know – more than half. Apparently there is a big hole in my 80s musical knowledge when it comes to rap. For the sake of my trivia team, I feel I must subject myself to Vanilla Ice and Sir Mix a lot on repeat, now.
